EDM Tending

Application: EDM Machine Tending

Solution: Fanuc M-710iBT/45 robot with R-J3iB controller

Application Requirements:

  • Ability to robotically load and unload a total of (8) EDM machines
  • Ability to robotically load and unload a series of storage shelved for work in progress
  • Ability to robotically load and unload a Zeiss CMM
  • Allow for operators to interact with the cell thru a PC based supervisory program
  • Ability for any EDM machine to be put into a manual mode at any time during the operation with no effect on the automation cell
  • Integrate both Fanuc and Mitsubishi EDM machines into the automation controls
  • Designed to run unmanned for long periods of time

Details:

The customer required an automated cell which would handle raw and finished material going to and from 8 EDM machines and 1 CMM machine. The system would have a large amount of storage racks for this material so that an operator could load the system and then let the system run unmanned for significant periods of time. Promatech utilized a Fanuc TopLoader robot to handle the material between the machines in a very efficient linear cell layout. Also, Promatech controls engineers developed a custom PC-based user interface for operators to work with. This kept the learning curve low on a complicated automation project for the operators. The system can handle up to 50lbs of tooling and material and the controller is always aware of all material location within the cell. The system including the robot, complete guarding, system controls, machine interfacing and onsite installation.
